BBC Director General Addresses Cardiff Ambassadors

Speaking at the Cardiff & Co Cardiff Ambassador's Gala Dinner in City Hall, BBC Director-General, Mark Thompson hailed the progress being made at BBC Roath Lock studios, situated in Cardiff Bay's Porth Teigr development.

In his keynote speech at the black tie dinner, Mr Thompson said many people in Cardiff believe that Roath Lock should only be the start of a much bigger vision - for a media capital either alongside it or on another site - along similar lines to Salford where the BBC is an anchor-tenant and creative guarantor.  The vision for Salford began with the BBC but now includes not just ITV, but independent producers, broadcast resource companies, universities, academies and others.

Mr Thompson also referred to partnership working and sharing of resources, which is taking place at BBC developments in Salford and Glasgow, saying: "The days are gone when the creative industries can afford petty rivalries between broadcasters and producers when it comes to the task of building a world-class creative hub."

Mark Hallett, Development Director at igloo - responsible for developing the site - welcomes the comments made by Mr Thompson: "I'm really pleased to have heard such positive comments from Mark Thompson about the developments taking place at Porth Teigr.  When the BBC Wales enquiry first came along to build a drama production centre on site, it was a major catalyst for the scheme.

With the BBC as the anchor tenant of Porth Teigr, it has been the vision that Porth Teigr will attract other like-minded creative companies and that the area will develop into a "creative hub" for the region.  We are already seeing increased numbers of enquiries from companies interested in locating their business close to BBC Roath Lock studios and are confident that Porth Teigr will, over time, become an internationally recognised mixed-use development, attracting new jobs and investment into Wales."
