Igloo Regeneration has announced that the contractor for the construction of Porth Teigr's newest building is VINCI Construction UK. VINCI Construction UK will be the main contractor for the new centre for the creative industries, with construction work due to start within the next month and the building will be available for occupation in early 2014.
The final designs for the Welsh Government's new £6million centre for the creative industries at Porth Teigr have now been approved. The building will sit on a waterside location opposite BBC Cymru Wales' Roath Lock studios, where Casualty, Doctor Who, Pobol y Cwm and Wizards v Aliens are being filmed.
VINCI Construction UK is no stranger to the Porth Teigr development, having been the main contractor for BBC Roath Lock studios which was the first building in Wales - and the first industrial building in the UK - to achieve the BREEAM Outstanding standard.
Mark Hallett, Development Director for igloo - the developers behind Porth Teigr - announced the award of the construction contract, and said: "Sustainability is a core value of igloo, and we were keen to appoint a contractor with excellent credentials in this area.
"We previously worked closely with VINCI to build Wales' first BREEAM Outstanding building through their construction of BBC Roath Lock studios, and achieved fantastic results including the diversion of 96% of site waste from landfill, and the use of apprentices and work experience placements.
"Our objective is for the centre for creative industries to aim for similar achievements, employ a local workforce, and use local suppliers, which will be socially responsible and provide the surrounding area with a lasting legacy."
Business Minister Edwina Hart said: "The new centre will not only be an important addition to the Porth Teigr development but will provide first class accommodation to support the growth of the creative industries sector and create new job opportunities.
"The new facility, together with BBC Cymru Wales's Roath Lock studios - one of the largest investments in new drama facilities of its kind in Europe - will create an environment for growth and form a new hub for one of our key sectors."
The 40,000sq ft centre will be built to BREEAM Excellent standards and construction will adhere to igloo's pioneering sustainable investment policy, FootprintR, which focuses on sustainable development, social inclusion, economic and social regeneration and equal opportunities. This will include employing local people and offering opportunities for trainees and work experience placements, as well as identifying and nurturing local supply chains.
Steve Vorres, Regional Director from VINCI Construction UK said: "We understand the value of sustainability, and we make a concerted effort to forge and maintain partnerships with local schools and colleges, offering practical support such as visits to school assemblies and on-site apprenticeships and work experience placements."
Porth Teigr is a 38-acre mixed-use, sustainable development project in Cardiff Bay, a joint venture between igloo (an Aviva Investors fund) and the Welsh Government. It is set to become a vibrant new commercial and residential community with more than 1million sq ft of commercial development space available.
Fletcher Morgan and Knight Frank, both with offices in Cardiff, have been appointed by Igloo as joint commercial agents for Porth Teigr.
