Doctor Who Experience now open at Porth Teigr

Cybermen, Daleks and the Silence are expected to be regular sights in Cardiff as BBC Worldwide's Doctor Who Experience opens at Porth Teigr.

The multi-award winning visitor attraction, the Doctor Who Experience, has officially opened its doors to the public [20 July] at igloo Regeneration's 38-acre Porth Teigr development in Cardiff Bay.

It is anticipated that Doctor Who fans will flock to Cardiff from all over the world to visit the Doctor Who Experience which is expected to be a major new tourist attraction for the city, estimated to attract around 250,000 visitors each year.

Originally based in Olympia, London, the Doctor Who Experience takes visitors on a journey through special effects, sets and memorabilia from the series, including a recreation of the modern TARDIS.

Doctor Who already has a strong connection with the Cardiff region, with the new series of Doctor Who currently being filmed at BBC Cymru Wales' Roath Lock studios - also situated at Porth Teigr.

Philip Murphy, Managing Director of BBC Worldwide Live Events said: "The atmosphere here today is electric, both visitors and staff are thrilled to be at the launch of the Doctor Who Experience as it opens in its new long term home in Porth Teigr, Cardiff Bay. The city itself is almost an extension of the Experience as so many places will be familiar to fans of the series, it's the perfect setting for the Experience."

Mark Hallett, Development Director for igloo - the development team behind Porth Teigr - says: "The opening of the Doctor Who Experience is a landmark moment for Porth Teigr, and is a fantastic example of successful public/private co-operation between igloo, BBC Worldwide, Cardiff Council and the Welsh Government.

"We are really excited about the benefits that the Doctor Who Experience will bring to the wider South Wales region in terms of visitor numbers, and have been encouraged by the increased footfall at Porth Teigr and visibility of the development.

"We are already seeing an increase in enquiries from companies interested in locating their business close to BBC Roath Lock studios and the Doctor Who Experience, and are confident that Porth Teigr will, over time, become an internationally recognised mixed use location, attracting new jobs and investment into Wales."

Council Leader Heather Joyce said: "I am delighted that the Doctor Who Experience is opening its doors to the public on Friday. This is another world-class attraction for the city and will provide a great opportunity for families to come to Cardiff Bay and experience something very special indeed.

"Doctor Who is now synonymous with Cardiff and the council is very proud that it has been able to construct this building in Porth Teigr to house the Doctor Who Experience, offering fans of the show the opportunity to star in their very own adventure and t see up close many of the props, monsters and costumes from the show. We wish BBC Worldwide every success with running this exciting venue."

Fletcher Morgan and Knight Frank, joint Agents for Porth Teigr, have reported that they have already received interest from businesses in the creative industries who wish to explore opportunities to cluster together at the development.
